Today on Mega64.com, we present to you a film that originally debuted on last summer’s Con Exclusive DVD. Last night I went to the SpikeTV Video Game Awards at Sony Studios in Los Angeles. The last time I had gone to that event was the show in 2006, which we all cringed pretty hard through (not that AFI is anything less than engaging). This year, however, I actually had a pretty good time. There were still the occasional awkward roadblock, but overall, I think it was a decent compromise between the game industry and Hollywod celebrity. Jack Black was a far more engaging host than Mr. Jackson, games won the awards they deserved (mostly), etc. Maybe it was an entirely different experience viewing it from home, I guess- I came home to a lot of complaints that it was the same old stuff from years before, that it had dragged. I didn’t really understand the “dragging” comments, as, drivel or not, it was fast-moving drivel. But I think a lot of people continue to have expectations of the show that are unfortunately never going to be met. The SpikeTV VGAs are never going to be an industry keynote, they will never be a prestigious medallion given to the unsung heroes of game development. The VGAs are spectacle. They are clips of hot games and 50 Cent rapping. The SpikeTV folks have already done us a favor by no longer giving awards to stuff like The Family Guy game or Most Badass Doritos-Based Flash Game Powered By Doritos. The fact that they let Wil Wright speak for five whole minutes (an eternity in awards-time) is a testament to their improvement in itself. They’re slowly but surely finding a balance for gamers and the cable TV crowd. Enjoy it for what it is.
